Economics graduate appointed Assistant Governor of Reserve Bank of New Ҷֱ

Ҷֱ (UC) Economics graduate, Christian Hawkesby, has been appointed Assistant Governor/General Manager of Economics, Financial Markets and Banking at Reserve Bank of New Ҷֱ (RBNZ).

Christian graduated from the University with a Master of Commerce (Hons) majoring in Economics. UC Associate Professor Alfred Guender says “Christian was an outstanding student at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. The class of 1997 was an extremely strong cohort of Honours and Master’s students. That speaks for Christian’s exemplary strong academic record at UC where he received A+ in all papers in the Master’s programme.”

After graduating, Christian joined the Reserve Bank of New Ҷֱ in 1998 along with fellow Master of Commerce studentSharon Zollner. Through his hard work and talent, Christian was then seconded to the Bank of England, where he quickly rose through the ranks over nine years. He gained a wealth of experience, holding various senior positions including Private Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Chief Manager of the Sterling Markets Division, and Head of Market Intelligence.

Professor Guender added that “Christian has a lot of experience in central bank and private asset management under his belt. This will put him in good stead as an Assistant Governor at RBNZ. He will be in good company at RBNZ which, year in year out, attracts UC’s outstanding students in economics and finance.”

Christian commences the Assistant Governor/GM Economics, Financial Markets and Banking role on 18thMarch 2019.
