Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

Introduction

The Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MTESOL) is a one-year professional qualification aimed at producing skillful English language educators for a wide variety of educational settings in the 21st century, from early childhood through to tertiary level. With its future focus, this Master's programme will give you the skills, knowledge, and capabilities to be adaptable in the face of future English language developments, as well as technological and pedagogical advances.

This programme is ideal for:

  • New Ҷֱ English language educators, or those who wish to specialise in English language education to emergent bilingual speakers of other languages in Aotearoa New Ҷֱ
  • graduates of Aotearoa New Ҷֱ universities who may currently teach or plan to teach English in other countries
  • teachers of English throughout the world who want or need to develop their language teaching.

This programme is available to study by distance, with teaching and learning conducted online.

Entry requirements

To enrol in the MTESOL you must have qualified for a bachelor's degree, or an equivalent degree (a B Grade Point Average in 300-level courses is normally expected). Relevant work experience will also be considered.

If English is your additional language, you are also required to meet UC's English language requirements.

How do I plan my degree?

The programme comprises 180 points made up of six courses (at 30 points each).

The programme is usually completed in 1 year full-time, although part-time study is possible up to 4 years.

MTESOL students can begin their studies in February, July, or November.

Since the course runs throughout the summer, this timetable is useful for those who may be full-time teachers and wish to study part-time. Please note that part-time study is not available to international students.

Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

Subjects and courses

MTESOL courses engage with contemporary thinking on language acquisition, learning and teaching, and English linguistics.

Sub-topics include the learning of indigenous and heritage languages, technology-enhanced and technology-mediated learning, the structure and use of English (including the study of linguistic corpora), and the position of English in all its varieties in the world (including the study of language politics, and current debate about the status of English and the native speaker).
